Types of Hearing Aid Batteries
admin | February 8, 2010There are numerous types of batteries for hearing aids, differentiated by size, colour and code. The commonly used batteries for hearing aids are the button type cell . Majority of the hearing aids use one of five regular button cell battery types, each corresponding to a particular colour code. The hearing aid model and type determines the type of battery to be used, its shape and size.
There are different colours for different battery sizes. Red corresponds to the smallest battery having size 5. Size 10 is represented by yellow. Blue represents the most commonly used battery size, 675. Yellow represents size 10 batteries. Size 312 is identified by brown colour and orange represents size 13. The colours make battery shopping and selection easier for the user.
Zinc batteries are used for cochlear implant hearing aids. This type of hearing aid is used when the patient suffers from severe hearing loss or deafness. The zinc type hearing aid batteries last longer and these batteries have a charge of 1.45 volts, which allows them to last longer. There are two types of Zinc batteries namely, standard type zinc batteries and high powered zinc type batteries. Most of the hearing aids use the standard type zinc batteries. Some implants require high powered zinc type batteries for better performance, better sound quality and longer life. However, some implants of cochlear type are compatible with standard zinc type too and the use of standard does not necessarily yield better performance or longer battery life. These types of batteries are usually small, round and have a colour code to represent the size of the battery. These batteries have a small tab, which when removed the oxygen in the air reacts with the zinc in the battery to activate the battery. This is done to ensure that the battery remains charged and fresh at the time of usage. Most of the audiologists have a machine that checks the life of the battery and this is very useful to know when the consumer has to replace the implant with a new battery.
Rechargeable battery is another type of hearing aid power source. They are made of NiMH and can be recharged about 300 times. Sizes are the same for all the types of batteries no matter what the charge is going to be. These batteries have a charge life of two weeks. Smaller batteries have shorter battery life.
Resound hearing aids are very affordable and reliable, and they are definitely worth their price.
