However, some implants of cochlear type are compatible with standard zinc type too and the use of standard does not necessarily yield better performance or longer battery life. These types of batteries are usually small, round and have a colour code to represent the size of the battery. These batteries have a small tab, which when removed the oxygen in the air reacts with the zinc in the battery to activate the battery. This is done to ensure that the battery remains charged and fresh at the time of usage. Most of the audiologists have a machine that checks the life of the battery and this is very useful to know when the consumer has to replace the implant with a new battery.

Rechargeable battery is another type of hearing aid power source. They are made of NiMH and can be recharged about 300 times. Sizes are the same for all the types of batteries no matter what the charge is going to be. These batteries have a charge life of two weeks. Smaller batteries have shorter battery life.
